Alexander Motchoulski Speaks on Reparations for Historical Territorial Injustice

Alexander Motchoulski, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Virginia, will give a talk with the title “Reparations for Historical Territorial Injustice.”

The talk will take place on November 5, 2025, from 4-5:30pm in Owens Ballroom (Owens Hall).

The talk is tailored to appeal to both faculty and students, with plenty of time for discussion and interaction with the guest speaker. The talk will be followed by a public reception. You are cordially invited to attend.

Here is the abstract of the talk: When and why should persons who reside on land that was wrongfully taken in the past provide reparations to the descendants of those who were displaced from that land? I defend what I call the practice repair view, according to which the ground of territorial reparations is the fact that damage was done to social practices which persist to this day, and contemporary occupants of unjustly taken territory should share in the value of the land to provide means for repairing those practices.

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please contact ppe@nullvt.edu at least ten business days before the event.
