Frances Smalera Shares Experience in Securing Study Abroad Opportunity at the Brussels School of Governance

PPE major, Frances Smalera, shares her experience in securing a study abroad opportunity with PPE major, Frances Smalera, shares her experience in securing a study abroad opportunity with the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) at the Brussels School of Governance (summer 2025).

Frances, can you tell us about your academic history at Virginia Tech?

I am a freshman double majoring in PPE and Philosophy and double minoring in Latin and Political Science. I plan to graduate in the fall semester of 2027. In addition to academics, I am a member of Mock Trial, Alpha Phi Omega, and Kappa Alpha Theta.

How did you learn about the ISEP Direct Exchange opportunity?

Coming into college, I knew that I wanted to study abroad. However, I also knew that my schedule might not allow me to have this experience. I found out about ISEP’s Direct Exchange programs through the Virginia Tech Study Abroad website. I browsed through all of the opportunities, and I found the program I decided to do at the Brussels School of Governance.

Can you tell us what the application process was like?

The application process was simple. I had to fill out a questionnaire, submit my transcript, and submit my passport information. Once I was approved, I was able to choose from the list of courses offered at the Brussels School of Governance this summer. The last step of the process was applying directly to the Brussels School of Governance to enroll myself as a student at the school this summer. I also had to fill out additional paperwork for Virginia Tech to ensure that my credits would transfer.

What experience do you hope to gain during your time in Brussels?

I have never been to Belgium, or most of Europe, so I hope to gain a better understanding of the culture. I will be taking courses dedicated to understanding the European Union, and one of my courses will potentially offer the chance to visit the European Union Headquarters in Brussels. I hope to learn more about the workings of the European Union and the similarities and differences between the governments in Europe and the United States.

How do you think your being part of the PPE program at Virginia Tech will best serve you at the Brussels School of Governance?

The PPE program at Virginia Tech has taught me an interdisciplinary perspective, which will be valuable in addressing complex governance and economics issues at the Brussels School of Governance. The foundation I have built so far at Virginia Tech will help me approach challenges with critical thinking and a fuller understanding of the ethical, political, and economic dimensions of decisions being made that will be discussed in my courses.

Is there any information that you would like to provide to current or prospective PPE students?

In my first year as a PPE student at Virginia Tech, I have learned invaluable skills in research and gained the confidence to take the step to study abroad without the direct support of Virginia Tech during my time abroad. I highly recommend the PPE program at Virginia Tech, and I also recommend the Brussels School of Governance to anyone interested in international politics and business!
