Daniel Gibbs Joins The Kellogg Center and Department of Political Science

The Kellogg Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and Department of Political Science are pleased to welcome Daniel Gibbs as a PPE Core Faculty member and Assistant Professor of Political Science.

Dr. Gibbs’ research develops game-theoretic models to study collective decision-making and political accountability in democratic political institutions. His work examines how politicians’ individual electoral interests influence the policy decisions they make collectively and how bureaucratic organization shapes the willingness and capacity of government agencies to implement policy.

Dr. Gibbs is the author of “Civil Service Reform, Self-Selection, and Bureaucratic Performance,” “Selection Rates and Bureaucratic Performance,” and “FA Hayek and the Administrative State.” His working papers study political pandering (“Individual Accountability, Collective Decision-making”), message legislation (“Virtue Signaling and the Politics of Message Legislation,” with Jesse Crosson and Charles Cameron), and the influence of the filibuster on lawmaking in the U.S. Senate (“The Reputation Politics of the Filibuster”).

Dr. Gibbs received his Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University in 2021 and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Gibbs will start his position at Virginia Tech in August 2022.
